review 1: Had I not participated in a book discussion after reading this novel, I would have rated it 3 stars only. The prose was a little harsh, or maybe terse, for me. After the discussion, which led me to understand the style more more as a reflection of the character and the plot line, I enjoyed it more. While it's still more of a 3.5 for me, I'm giving it four because it makes a great discussion book, particularly with men in the group.
review 2: I would have given this book one star, except that parts of the writing were beautiful and I also learned a little about the Korean War. That said, I could wait to be finished with it, so I could move on to something else. The author's style was very different, and somewhat difficult to follow at times. While the author did
... more a good job intimating the horrors of the war, I never developed any connection with the characters. Maybe it was just too deep for me at this moment in time. less

Chilling descriptions of battle in the Korean War juxtaposed with a story of first love.

Great potential but pooped out at end.
