review 1: Had I not participated in a book discussion after reading this novel, I would have rated it 3 stars only. The prose was a little harsh, or maybe terse, for me. After the discussion, which led me to understand the style more more as a reflection of the character and the plot line, I enjoyed it more. While it's still more of a 3.5 for me, I'm giving it four because it makes a great discussion book, particularly with men in the group.
review 2: I would have given this book one star, except that parts of the writing were beautiful and I also learned a little about the Korean War. That said, I could wait to be finished with it, so I could move on to something else. The author's style was very different, and somewhat difficult to follow at times. While the author did... more a good job intimating the horrors of the war, I never developed any connection with the characters. Maybe it was just too deep for me at this moment in time. less
