review 1: Napoleon Childs is a tough, laconic, old cavalryman. He leads a patrol of young men after Villa's forces in late 1916 Mexico. His patrol is ambushed, and all but Childs die. He walks back across the desert, reflecting on his life, his career, and his losses. Being terse and laconic, being not a reflective person by nature, his musings are not particularly insightful. That lack is the novel's chief weakness, good as Olmstead is. Childs is resigned to the life he has led (or followed), which makes his receiving orders for France upon returning from his ordeal in the desert just one more occasion for resignation.

... moreestern read ANY of Cormac Mccarthy's novels. This is clearly a rip of of McCarthy's work. Authors thought's: "hey im going to do something that people have never seen before... write a western with brutal voilence, and not a lot of punctuation for simplicity..." OH WAIT CORMAC MCCARTHY HAS BEEN DOING THAT FOR YEARS. Save your self time and money and dont read this garbage less
