Dr John Watson
review 1: Faithful but sorrowful legacy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I simply had to state that as my general, underlying impression of this book. That however, is not a criticism of Robert Ryan. Rather, I mean, by fully exploring a possible continuation of the Holmes / Watson relationship circa 1914; Ryan has conjured a logical and very plausible further life for Dr John Watson, while at the same time really describing and labouring the inevitable onset of old age in both Watson and an embittered, though very characteristic Holmes. Surprisingly, I found the well detailed and superbly approached narrative of the events on the western front as experienced through the eyes of one : "Pals Battalion", to be less involving than the descriptions of a very melancholy Dr Watson as he reflect... moreed sadly on the bygone glory days of Baker Street. Robert Ryan has clearly researched both the Western Front and Holmes well though as his
review 2: I fair galloped through this excellent novel as it encompasses two of my long held favourite subjects - Sherlock Holmes and the Great War. Now, this could have been a cheap cash in by an author jumping on the Centenary of the Great War next year, but it isn't. Its well written, authentic, compelling reading - and I can't wait to read the sequel with Watson now back recuperating in Blighty, and a young schoolteacher grieving for her lost brother arriving at her school to find the surrounding area stripped of the usual inhabitants, and armed to the teeth, supercilious military men waiting to warn her off asking any question on pain of death. less

Excellent continuation of the Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson story set during WW I.
