review 1: This book is just bad. This is the first book about vampires that I read (no, I didn't read "Dracula", nor "Twilight"...) and I don't know if I am ready for any other book about blood-suckers. The plot? Very simple and previsible. Very. Characters? I think they were taken from the '90s and very cliched. The writing is bad. I'm sorry, but you can't just put some funny nonsense as thoughts of a guy who is in horrible pain (again). The rape scene was ridiculous. Just to give you some taste of this book's style here's an excerpt: "The strange sound continued. He could hear the incessant beeping of what sounded like hospital monitoring equipment and something else. The "something else" was what confused him. It sounded like French kissing maybe, or a person sucking on something... more." ...so yeah. One star.
review 2: 3 and a half stars.Wilson has definitely brought real vampires back to the horror genre, thank God. His vampire flashbacks made me think of Ann Rice (and that's a good thing). There were a number of times throughout where I was wondering what the hell? And then, once Wilson revealed a little more, my patience was rewarded and I understood. My favorite characters overall would be Ishan and Rachel. I always love it when I start a book hating a character and then end up empathizing with, or pulling for that same character. Great work!While the vampires didn't really scare me, they definitely do not come out as the teenie-bopper lovables. The American Empire on the other hand scares teh crap out me. I'm afraid of what Lord Caesar has in store for us in Book 2. Overall, I found this to be a nice debut novel, and will definitely be picking up Book 2 next month. less
