review 1: Let me explain. I have one of those sisters, the know-it-all who used to get me in trouble. We're adults and to this day she would still get me in trouble for agreeing with her "ideas". Luckily for me and she, I am the oldest. So I immediately understood the premise of the oldest sister who had a stupid scheme that got both sisters in knee-deep trouble. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (and cheated by skipping to the last pages to see what happened -- it was a swiping accident, I swear). The characters are well-developed, i.e., familiar and lovable. This story is nowhere near the horny vampire tales that are populating the genre. If you think Salem's Lot then you're on the right path. Also, if you want an old-fashioned scare, this novel is it. My only complaint is that it's ... moretoo short. If I could rate this book six stars I would do so specifically for the character development, the crisp prose and excellent premise.
review 2: A good prelude to the Shining in Crimson novel, but don't expect it to be about the same topic. Think of it more as a separate story told in the same world. Two sisters go out to visit Necropolis, formally Vegas. The oldest just plans to scare her little sister and maybe find some valuable old currency. They should be in and out before nightfall, or so they thought. This is a good short story that is fairly well written. It is certainly enjoyable. less
