review 1: A long, dark journey through the complex world of Rome's detectives. The protagonist is a time-worn investigator, skilled at his craft but distracted by the torturous maze of city and Vatican politics. The growing influx of Rom people and Eastern European migrants and the investigator's own family history in Libya provide a rich cultural backdrop to a novel of sexual opportunism and occasional brutality. A must for those who love Mediterranean noir. The translation from Italian is seamless and quite invisible.
review 2: Michele Balistreri is the main character and not at all likeable as the novel begins. He is a young, rebellious, womanizing, hard living policeman. This all changes when he arrests the wrong person for a brutal murder after he has delayed taking... more action so that he can enjoy the World Cup finals. He becomes a tortured, guilty, jaded man who 24 years later is determined to solve this murder and the new murders that are so similar that he knows there is a connection. There are a lot of twists along the way and I suspected first one person then another of the murders but Michele prevailed in the end. I received this book in a GoodReads giveaway. less
