SPOILERS!!!
Nina is still keeping mum about Ben appearing in advertisements. After the photo shoot that Eliza got him to do, he has done an advertisement about baby shampoos, and he is scheduled to do another one in a supermarket. I imagine that Nina knows what Jonathan will say, and she keeps quiet and even lies about where she takes Ben. This will only end up in disaster, especially if Jonathan sees his son in one of these advertisements.
Now Nina and Jonathan are making the arrangements for their wedding. There wasn’t a romantic proposal, but Jonathan mentioned that it was convenient, and Nina agreed. The relationship between them is strange because even though they live together, they barely know each other. Nina feels shy to speak her mind sometimes, and so far I haven’t heard either of them mention love. Do they love each other? We know that they were forced into their incipient relationship when Nina accidentally fell pregnant, so they hadn’t covered all the bases that normal couples usually have.
Nina and Jonathan become friends with a couple they met in antenatal classes. They are Beth and Matthew. Beth is quite peculiar as she boasts about being a supermummy and relishes in her role. Yet, she has recently complained to Nina about Matthew’s lack of interest in her. Beth decides to hire an live-in au-pair, Rosie, who is really efficient, but when Beth discovers that before being her nanny, she used to be a lap-dancer, she is not happy, but Rosie is really good with Maud, her baby, so she has no grounds to let her go. I have the hunch that Matthew might be too keen on the nanny, and I have the suspicion that there is something untoward going on. One example is when Beth and Nina take the children for a walk on a city farm, and Maud wanders off and ends up wet in the river, so Beth has to call Rosie to bring her some dry clothes. When Rosie appears, she mentions that Matthew is at home when he was supposed to be at work, and her explanation is that there was a bomb scare in his office, and everybody was evacuated. Then Beth also tells Nina about going away to her mother’s for a few days, but Matthew will stay because he doesn’t like her mother, so it will be him and Rosie alone in the house. Mmm, quite fishy!!!
I am loving the book. Funny and entertaining. I wonder what will happen to Jonathan and Nina in the end. Will they get married? Will they fall in love for real? Or is their relationship doomed?
