review 1: The prequel comic to this summer's "Star Trek Into Darkness," the imaginatively titled next entry in the Trek franchise. (Technically, this is "non-canon," meaning it doesn't bind future ST writers the way a ST movie would...so imagine it as conjecture.)I read this about 3 weeks ago and can barely remember what it was about....I guess that tells you something. I do remember that this contained an interesting dilemma about the Prime Directive, which I appreciated. The Prime Directive seems like a good enough idea--don't interfere with civilizations, let them develop on their own--but when you think about it, it's terribly elitist and, potentially, as destructive a national policy as genocide. Imagine if we cut off all AIDS relief from Africa because "it's important to let t... morehose civilizations develop on their own?"This comic examines that issue in an honest way. Ultimately, it seemed pretty insubstantial to me, but if you're a fan of the Abrams Star Trek universe you should check it out.
review 2: It had some good character moments, building on the relationships established in Star Trek (2009) and pointing to further development in Into Darkness. Some of the setup is questionable (Mudd's Bajoran daughter) and the foreshadowing felt heavy-handed. I did read this after seeing the movie. I don't know if Protocol 31 is a reference to Section 31, or not. The plot felt a bit thin and largely a rehash of "The Omega Glory". Given the loving and thoughtful retellings of classic Trek episodes in the other prime universe comics, I was hoping that this movie tie-in would strike out in a bold new direction and tell a completely original story. less
