review 1: Great primer for young children on the difference between boys and girls. I love the tone of these books. So far I have only read this one with my boys (3.5 and 6.5), but I have the others and plan to read them as they become appropriate. This one was perfect for my 3yo, and a nice starter for my 6yo who will read the next book with me soon I imagine. Nothing about reproduction is discussed here, except for the most obvious relevant body parts and the fact that women sometimes have babies in their bellies. The tone is so matter of fact and non-threatening, but still sweet and child-like. It even has a little boy and girl we follow as they learn the difference between boys and girls. Nice, light-hearted illustrations too. Definitely recommend. It brought up some good conver... moresation and took the edge right off discussing this stuff. I wish I'd gotten this one years ago to read to my oldest then.
review 2: This book normalizes the human body, including our genitalia. Most of the book talks about the different parts of our body (e.g. eyes, legs, cheeks) that we share with each other, as well as with other animals. The author then goes into the things that make boys and girls different, and the two children in the book realize that they're a little different, but mostly they're the same. This is all done while a family is going to the beach--so, it's natural for the boy and girl to change into their swimming suits, and talk about their different parts with their mom and dad respectively during that time. I loved that the family in question is depicted as being interracial. There are also many other ethnicities pictured throughout the book, which goes perfectly with the "everybody has a body" theme. The language used is easy to understand (with the exception of the technical words, like 'ovaries' or 'testicles'), upbeat, and entertaining. In the pictures, everyone is happy and relaxed, which makes talking about what could possibly be an uncomfortable topic, much nicer. less

Will our librarian put this one on the shelf? She SHOULD, but...Wonder what Franki would do?

A nice tone and just the right amount of straight forward information.
