review 1: I wanted to like this book a lot. History and crime have always been one of my go to's, and this definitely had a promising premise. But once the author hit his stride, it was just dull. I pretty much had to force myself to get through more than half way through the book, though once I did, it was a relief, as at least there was interesting things happening. Compared to the rest of the book, the end felt a bit rushed, but I would have been happy if that had been the pace of the whole book. I appreciate that it is difficult to write a historically accurate fiction, but I guess my main complaint was the narrator's characterization felt a bit forced, so I couldn't really be bothered to care about him, and he was narrating dull people who I couldn't bothered, overall, to care... more about what happened to them, so, when they were reintroduced later in the story I couldn't remember exactly who they were. The day to day descriptions of how people lived and worked was interesting, and to me, the day to day hum drum of these people's lives was more interesting than what the main characters were supposed to have been doing.
review 2: An 18th century "who dun it", complete with "forensic science" of the day. Very entertaining in the light of all the CSI programmes of today. Historically accurate apparently which made it all the more interesting. There was not one character I could warm too, but plenty of twists in the tale to keep me engaged.I was sure I had figured out "Who Dun it" by page 222, but sadly was mistaken. A great insight into a pre industrial community with all it's superstitions and traditions. Did I enjoy it?? Well, enjoy is not the word... intrigued and fascinated. Either way I could not put it down. less

This book was great - for napping - I fell asleep every time I picked it up. Very predictable too.

Not as awesome as I hoped. Historical mysteries are often that way.

Feels like a Sherlock Holmes story set a hundred years earlier.
