His Fair Assassin
review 1: A Total different approach than the other two in this series of his fair assassin. Where the other two books were full of action, this one sees the main character more contemplating about her role as a daughter of Mortain. Annith is the third of the three best friends at the convent, who is still waiting for Her first assignment. Where sybella and ismae have served the God of death, Aninith has been overlooked it seems although she wants so badly to proof that she to is fit to serve Him. She gets her chance but not how she anticipated it.It was definitely a difficult book to get into but because the first two in the series were so gripping, I thought this one needed a little more time. When the previous two characters show up the book becomes more intere... moresting
review 2: Book three of His Fair Assassin finally accomplishes what I've been hoping for all this time: it maintains an appealing balance between the story of Brittany's struggle to remain independent and the story of Mortain's followers. We finally get to spend a little more time at the convent, gaining some insight into what it's like there.Annith's frustration at being kept out of the action without a proper explanation is a palpable thing. Unlike in the past books, when Ismae and Sybella were left waiting impatiently for the go-ahead to act, Annith takes matters into her own hands and forges ahead with plans to escape the dull destiny the abbess wishes to saddle her with. We're right there with her as she begins to question everything she's ever been told and, piece by piece, begins to put together the tale of her own past.We also receive some much-welcome context on the various gods and how they operate in the real world, thanks to Annith spending some time among Mortain's hellequins and meeting some followers of Arduinna. Throughout the series, I've had a vague feeling that certain lore-related things have been under-explained, and this book finally fills in some of the gaps (if not all of them).Everything comes to a satisfying conclusion, with Annith playing a surprising and gratifying part in fighting to keep her country from the jaws of the French. And there is, of course, a compelling love story that easily stands up alongside those of the previous books. My favourite of the series. less
