His Fair Assassin
review 1: Although the convent of St. Mortain offered her refuge in a time of grief and despair, Sybella feels betrayed when the abbess orders her back to the life that nearly drove her mad. She is now trained in the art of death, but life is dangerous for anyone living in the court of her ruthless father, Count d’Albret. Six months with her father leaves Sybella longing for death, but a change in orders from the convent gives her new purpose. Her father keeps a fallen knight in his dungeon and it is Sybella’s responsibility to bring the courageous man to safety. As she helps save the Beast of Waroch, Sybella admires his strength and comes to understand the strengths she holds as well. This second book in the His Fair Assassin series continues LaFevers’s tradition of excell... moreent historical fiction. Her portrayal of fifteenth century Britanny is intriguing and fast-paced with excellent characterization. This second book brings Sybella to the forefront, but still provides glimpses of Ismae and others from her first book. Dark Triumph is captivating enough for young adult readers with a hint of the supernatural in well-written historical fiction.Interest level--ages 14 and up
review 2: **Thanks to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for this copy of Dark Triumph**I hate that I was unable to finish this one. I just couldn't get into this book. I never found any of the characters very likable or really appealing. I had read the "back cover" summary of the book before starting it, but I just really didn't like the aspect that Sybella is working for Mortain and in the end killing people. I just don't like that at all. I also thought this book had a very confusing and slow, slow start. There must have been a better way to begin the story. We see a kinder side to Sybella in the beginning, but just overall the beginning was not good. Again sadly I have to mark this as an uncompleted book. less
