review 1: When Sybella leaves the convent to return to her father's house, she has been trained as an assassin but she is still broken inside. After years of being abused, she has learned how to survive but not how to love. As a servant of Death, she wants more than anything to send her father, D'Albret to his underworld but instead, she is given a most unwelcome assignment that, in the end, will change everything. This was better than the first, I think because the ending felt more solid to me in this one. I loved how the story continued on but just from the point of view of another character - a nice twist on the usual trilogy. It completely absorbed me and while Sybella's story is very harsh at times, the historical period and the romantic plotline are engrossing. I love the ... moremix of the otherworldly gods and the solid historical footing, and even though we really delve into the two main characters (everyone else is fairly two dimensional) those two main characters are incredibly complex and I loved Sybella's arc. The way she grew and changed felt very realistic. I loved the idea of us finding our strength in our love for others. Now I have to go read the last one.
review 2: Completely loved this one. I did really enjoy the previous book, but this one ROCKED. I guess I'm more into the idea of Justice than Mercy, go figure. Despite Sybella being less powerful and gifted than her sister Ismae, I think Ismae was more of a softie than Sybella. Granted, Sybella had a much harder life that she had to survive, but Ismae's life wasn't an easy one either.I LOVE how the author has made two completely different characters in Ismae and Sybella. They don't feel like carbon-copies of each other. They have their own personalities and quirks and different ways that they would deal with similar issues. I'm also relieved that Sybella isn't the innocent, virginal miss, nor the slut-shammed promiscuous girl that is so pervasive in YA novels. She did what she had to do to survive and to do her job as a Daughter of Mortain. The one thing I was slightly irked with is that marriage wasn't a topic that was broached as it was with Ismae and her beau. I admit, I know nothing about the time period in which this story takes place, but reading about it has certainly piqued my interest. Yet another topic I need to add to my ever-growing "things I want to learn about" list. The characters were real to me, the setting was described enough to take me there, but not so much that it distracted from the story. More intrigue, though not necessarily political. A much darker book than the first one, definitely and firmly in the YA category. But I guess a book about a convent of female assassins who are the Daughters of the God of Death, where the main characters all kill is going to be a bit on the dark side. But there is always hope and redemption. It's dark, but not pitch black. And I kind of have a little crushie-poo on Beast. I liked him in the first book and really like him in this one. Not enough Ismae and no Annith that I could see or recall. And is the abbess a witch on heels or what?!? I SO want to know what her agenda is, because there has to be a reason for her to be the way she is. I have a feeling that will come out in the third and final book. Which I am picking up immediately after this one. So if you read my first review, you will see that while I enjoyed that book, I had much higher hopes for this one. It did not disappoint. Usually in a trilogy, the second book suffers from the "sophomore slump". This trilogy did not and I really hope that the next book is just as good. I can't wait to read it! I highly recommend this book, though due to some graphic scenes, on and of "camera", this is better suited to YA and VERY mature middle readers. I think adults would enjoy this one as well. I know I did. :)My thanks to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for an eARC of this book to read and review. less
