review 1: i'm a big fan of McKinley - ever since reading Beauty as a teenager. So to find another book by her at the library was such a buzz. However, perhaps my reading tastes have changed; perhaps writing styles have. Anyway, Chalice, although interesting, was a little disappointing. The first half of the book felt really slow - at one point there were five pages of descriptive text without any dialogue. However, by the end the pace had picked up and the ending was really good. I liked the originality of McKinley's vision, especially the use of bees in the story, that was really interesting and I don't think I've seen that before in a fantasy novel. I loved the idea of a priest of Fire gradually turning into fire, how that would look, feel and sound to the watchers. So I enjoyed i... moret, but not as much as some of her other material. Or maybe it's me that's changed...
review 2: I surprisingly really enjoyed this book. I was surprised because it took me a long, long time to understand what in the world was going on, with things flipping back and forth in the narrative/time, sometimes almost in the same paragraph with virtually no markers to indicate when, where and who. Besides that, the world was beautiful and fascinating and I would LOVE to see another story set in this lovely, inter-connected world. less

Delightful with a clear main story and lightly sweetened with honey.

Well-imagined and a very unique world. Very romantic, too.
