review 1: "Dead Politician Society" is the first of a Canadian series featuring Clare Vengel, an undercover police detective with attitude. Here she is investigating the public deaths by poison of a number of Toronto politicians. This is sort of a "police procedural" but really Vengel is just one of many main characters (some are academic types, some are newspaper types) who are all trying to ascertain (usually in isolation) the "why" of the killings and the "who" (both the perpetrator "who" and the next victim "who"). The plot advances somewhat slowly (not a drawback) and is told almost entirely in dialog (something of a drawback until the characters and their relationships are sorted out). Each chapter (and there are many chapters) is brief (most are 5-6 pages) and are from a part... moreicular character's point of view (the chapter title is the character). I found this to be a well-done story but the shifting point of view, the large number of characters, and the emphasis on dialog leads me to recommend readers pay close attention or risk getting lost.
review 2: Using the fact that I find Janet Evanovich somewhat tame for my tastes, I'll say that this book offered little to hold my interest. I did find Clare intriguing in that she's enough of a bad girl to drink, smoke, and get it on with different men on consecutive days - what's not to like about that? - but the fact that there is not the slightest hint of titillation for the reader diminishes one's interest level. Two stars is fairly generous; clearly this is aimed at the Better Homes & Gardens crowd, albeit with a lesbian twist. less

An interesting start to the series, I'm curious to see where the author goes with it.

This was a fun mystery with some great characters. Clare is an awesome female lead.
