review 1: This was a very good read! Stevens created a complete world in Deepdean School, with a plot that thumped along well and two REALLY well-drawn heroines. The mystery itself could have used a bit more setup, but the real pleasure is watching the clashes between quiet and watchful Hazel Wong, and the too-clever-by-half Daisy Wells. It's a beautiful subversion and examination of the Holmes/Watson dynamic, expressed between two thirteen-year old girls. I look forward to seeing where Robin Stevens takes them next.
review 2: Set in a boarding school in 1934, MURDER MOST UNLADYLIKE is a story about a murder mystery and two thirteen-year-old detectives determined to get to the bottom of it. When Hazel Wong finds the body of her Science teacher in the school gym, she rush
... morees for help, only to find the body is gone when she returns. No one besides her best friend, Daisy Wells, believes there was a body there to begin with, and the two girls are punished for telling lies. Reluctant to share their findings with anyone else, Hazel and Daisy start to investigate the murder on their own with a list of suspects and their motives. When all the school staff start acting strangely for many reasons, the suspect list grows and everything gets a bit muddled up for the two of them, leading each to believe they know who did it and temporarily fall out over their disagreements. Of course, they make up in no time, and I thought their friendship was written very realistically. The book is written as if Hazel is recording the events in her casebook, which I found clever and refreshing. It reminded me of Cluedo, and I completely lost the game because I couldn’t figure out who it was. So I guess I won’t be accepted into the Wells and Wong Detective Society any time soon. MURDER MOST UNLADYLIKE is something special and will appeal to all with its wonderful humour and charm. less
