review 1: I have a lot of feelings about this book. I really enjoyed it. It's a time and place I haven't explore much in fiction - integration in the Civil Rights era in the South. For that reason alone, it is an intense, difficult read. The book is told in two viewpoints. Sarah is a senior who is starting as one of a handful of black students into a formerly all-white school. And Linda is a popular senior whose father is loud and outspoken for segregation and against integration. The two of them deal throughout with their own struggles and understanding of one another. There's more to it than that, including their relationship and the pressures and expectations on young women of the time period and how both Linda and Sarah cope and come to understand that.. Honestly, I couldn't put... more the book down.
review 2: This book was hard to read. It was, however, completely worth it. It's 2014, and we're only 55 years removed from the events in this book. Historically speaking, that's like yesterday. 55 years ago, my husband and I wouldn't have berm able to attend the same school let alone be married. That's scary. This book is a very real window into the integration struggle in the South, and I really believe it should be required reading. less
