The Fall of the Gas-Lit Empire
review 1: I gave up on this novel. Great cover art and title do not a great book make. I probably read between half and two thirds. It was a fast, easy read, but I found I just didn’t care what happened. First of all, it never felt like steam punk to me, it felt more like an alternative history (which is fine, but, please, let's get our genres straight). Also, I had suspected from the very beginning that it would end in a cliffhanger because on the cover it says “first book of the Gas-Lit Empire series” or something like that. So, when I realized I wasn’t really enjoying it and was thinking very heavily about stopping it, I committed a reader’s sin and looked at the last page. Sure, enough, a cliff-hanger! I'm not a fan of this this new (I think, or I’ve just realized in... more the past few years) trend of purposely writing books with cliff-hangers. I feel like it’s a gimmick just to get people to buy more books. I strongly believe that an author has a duty to write the best possible complete story that he can, and, then, if it’s good enough, people will want a sequel if he has one to tell. Both the original story and the sequel should be able to stand on their own without blackmailing your audience. And not every book needs a sequel; if fact, most of the great works of literature don't have sequels.
review 2: I will start by saying this book was interesting. I loved the gaslight Victorian setting, I loved the strong female lead, and I loved all the circus aspects in this book. That being said I feel like the plot as a whole was a bit forced, it was a brilliant journey to set everything up, and for me i thought climax didn't really hold up to what came before. Still I think this is a world i would gladly visit again, I just hope the authors next plot holds up to the high hopes i had at the beginning of the book. less
