review 1: This is the best exploration of two guys sitting around talking shite since 'Waiting for Godot.'I love Roddy Doyle's books, mainly because of the dialogue - when films have been made of his work (such as The Commitments) the script has virtually been written already as his dialogue is so lively and condensed. The series of conversations are little commentaries about world affairs and two men who seem commonplace but occasionally come out with something bizarre (like a grandson who keeps wild animals) - I can almost imagine these being animated as a two minute fill-in spot between TV programsThis isn't a big book - but there's a lot going on. In fact even though it was only written during the events of 2012, I had to stop a moment and try to remember what it is they are ref... moreerring to - as big people and events are reduced to "You know that guy Gadaffi" or "Herself's all upset about that Whitney."It was a little disappointing that the conversations just ended, that there wasn't a final concluding entry or that it led to a climax - and I would be disappointed if this just means this is the first of a series, but it's still a delightful pause in guffery between other things.
review 2: Straight off the back of "The Guts" I decided to read another Roddy Doyle story. This is less of a story and more of a series of scenes set in a pub. A slim volume this one, but enjoyable none the less.Flan O'Brien's "The Brother" for a new and different age, not least the language in use. Quite colourful even by Mr. Doyle's standard. The subjects covered are very much of the day and this style might work very well in a weekend newspaper as a sideways look at the weeks news. Reading it two years on from when it was written some of the acuteness is lost in time. less
