review 1: I jumped into this head first and eyes closed, and I felt like I swallowed a mouth-full of saltwater! So terrible, but in a good way. This book was recommended by a friend with an interesting taste in films and crime culture, and I thought anything he recommended would be unique at a minimum. Additionally, I have not read anything that takes place in Cape Town. While the writing style may leave something to be desired, I couldn't put the book down. I explained to my friends and family that the characters were so gritty, so flawed, it was not a matter of rooting for one to live, but rooting for who you wanted to kill who first. I think I have never read a book with so many undesirable characters that you could not turn away from. Although it has flaws, I would recommend thi... mores read for anyone with an interest in crime, mystery, or suspense novels.
review 2: This is the brilliant first novel from Roger Smith and I have just ordered the others. Smooth as silk in structure, it connects like an Alan Altman film. Extremely visceral writing, laugh out loud moments combined with action packed plot and some of the best hard boiled prose I've read in years. Very very violent in action and images, so be warned because Roger Smith pulls no punches in his depiction of Cape Town. Dante's Inferno, more like and to quote one of his characters, the quite unbelieably horrible Barnard, "you get me?" Reminded me in parts of Coetzee's "In the Heart of the Country" but this is serious thriller stuff not literary tho he does a beautiful line in gorgeous, pared backed descriptions of the South African landscape. He stays within the rules of the genre but boy oh boy, its good. Its very good. less
