review 1: I read this for a book club discussion and was impressed with Merullo's ability to write from a female's perspective, given the various topics of the book. I just read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls a few weeks ago, and it immediately came to mind when I started The Talk-Funny Girl. Just exemplifies that some people should not reproduce! I liked Marjorie (for the most part) and Sands, and was happy with the ending. Good character development and the writing kept my interest.
review 2: This might sound like what I usually label "an Oprah book" if I say that it is about abuse, survival, strength, and redemption. But I liked it very much, and I don't see this as the usual "I have come through adversity and the light is shining upon me" inspiring book club
... morebook I have little patience for. The narrator is disarming, the book's splinter religious group is sketched plausibly and not used simply for shock value, and the author has some insight into the interior lives of his characters. less
