review 1: It started off OKAY. Really, at the beginning, I was kind of into it. And then... I don't know... Ron Irwin's overly-complicated, anti-climactic, and overall uninteresting first novel lost me. Don't get me wrong, it had lovely moments. And there was one passage toward the beginning (in which the narrator describes a poignant interaction with his father) that totally blew me away. But... Overall, FLAT WATER TUESDAY came up short for me, as sorry as I am to say it.
review 2: Excellent writing about rowing... I have not found such technically accurate descriptions in the same place as an author has captured the spirit and sensory experience of rowing. The back and forth between adult and youth Rob didn't really turn out to be particularly meaningful for me but the
... more youth Rob was described with detail and sensitivity. But why oh why are the details of life in Vancouver towards the end so inaccurate? University of Vancouver? less

This was a quick read about a crew of rowers at a private New England boarding school.

Very good. A little technical with the rowing stuff at times but I really enjoyed it.
