review 1: Disappointing collection of titbits and anecdotes the author got told by the FBI.The books deals with the history of the FBI and it's directors in a pleasantly critical way. There are a lot of quotes from interviews, which are left mostly uncommented.I felt the book lacked structure since it jumped between topics, mafia, terrorists, espionage,...It's interspersed with anecdotes in which FBI agents brag about their skills in breaking and entering and placing bugs. The authors never questions the numbers and anecdotes when it comes to the ability of the FBI to catch terrorists.
review 2: this was great! definitely the most in-depth insight to the activities of the FBI. for example, i learned all about TacOps, which is basically the team that bugs houses or puts in
... moresurveillance systems. to do this, they have to go through all sorts of crazy hoops. for example, the fbi might take photos of a home and then blow up the photos onto a big, pull up stretch canvas and put it out in front of the house int he middle of the night. there would be a few feet between the pull up image and the actual house, which left enough space for the agents to play with the locks on the door. apparently right before 9/11 there were like no modern computers and also FBI, CIA and NSA were totally disjointed so the FBI had no clue what was happening. also sounds like hoover messed up the FBI because he wouldn't go after the mafia and lots of other issues. less
