review 1: I'm not really sure why this book got such good reviews. The plot was mildly interesting, but the writing left something to be desired. Even when the writer describes the tragedy and what happened (no spoilers, even though you can see it coming a MILE away), I did not care. I felt no emotion. Usually, I will cry anytime something sad or happy or at all emotional happens in books. So the fact that I didn't shed a tear over this one says a lot. The plot moved very slow. Seriously, the tragedy didn't happen until more than halfway through the book. I wasn't even interested in what was happening until the very end. And the author described the point of view of about ten different characters. Every chapter was a new perspective and the voices of certain people sounded exactly t... morehe same. All in all, it felt like a Lifetime movie. I read it just to see what happened at the end, but I would not recommend it.
review 2: This is a book that will keep you completely engaged throughout the whole story. It is a story that blurs the lines between black and white, right and wrong, and justice vs. just wrong. Bernie is the youngest in the family and is the only one in her family that is not married. She fights crime in the courtroom, whereas her brothers and brother-in-law fight crime on the streets of NY. While she did not follow in the path of her family being a police office or being married to one, Bernie earns her right at the family table. Every Sunday, the family has Sunday dinner where they each talk about cases or crimes they’ve handled….yeah, typical Sunday talk ;) However, after a horrific crime, Bernie’s faith in the justice system is tested as well as her relationship with her father. Sunday dinners are no longer the same, relationships are strained, but this family is resilient and a piece of hope and new beginnings emerge after the family has been tested. This is an excellent read and a book I highly recommend! less
