review 1: There's something about the Scandinavian psyche that I must appreciate. From Elsa Beskow, to Astrid Lindgren, to Bodil Bredsdorff... All of these authors write material that I connect with, and that I think add to the body of really healthy and inspiring children's literature. This book is beautifully designed and produced. A lovely thing to hold. The story is simple, but like "Eidi," that is a big part of its charm. A young girl longs for a friend, finds one, and then the friend moves away. As this very uncomplicated plot unfolds, Dani floats in and out of being happy, all the while negotiating the day-to-day ups and downs of real life. Despite the struggles, she finds a way to stay on the joy side of things. A quick note: this book looks like a middle grade novel, but it ... moreis more of an easy reader. There are illustrations (very whimsical and well conceived illustrations) on just about every page and the text is slight. I zipped through it in 30 minutes or less...When most of what the kids bring home these days is Judy Moody, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this is a refreshing dose of goodness. Like water, almost, when the other books feel a lot more like soda and spicy cheetos...
review 2: Compact story, short chapters, and not much text per page make this an ideal young reader chapter book. This story of two fast friends separated by one having to move away would resonate with many readers. The main character Dani, who has lost her mother, lives with her father. She copes with the loss of a best friend by finally getting hamsters and visiting her friend at Easter. Packed with concise black and white drawings which add to the text. I wondered if kids still write letters. This book, first published in Sweden is on the USBBY's Outstanding International Books List for 2014. It is also on the Children's Notables list for 2014. It does give a glimpse of ordinary life in Sweden as opposed to the 5 F's (festivals, food, fashion, folklore, & flags). less
