review 1: I do appreciate Elden's efforts to differentiate her book from the multitude of new teacher advice books - not so much chicken soup for the teacher's soul, but hard liquor for the teacher's soul. Not all teacher's are crafty, organized, holiday-sweater wearing ladies. However, the actual advice contained within the book isn't all that great - fairly obvious stuff (perhaps because she tried to appeal to everyone at once - kindergarten through high school). Two stars, though, just for all the teacher quotes that left me with a satisfied knowing grin that I'm not alone.

There are two brief chapters for experienced/mentor teachers and administrators, but this book is mainly for those teachers just starting out. Elden isn't afraid to say what she believes, or go against what might be considered traditional practices in favor of more practical methods. Overall, a great companion for any new teacher. less
