review 1: (Warning - spoilers) I found this book very disturbing and mysogynistic. All the women except a few minor characters are all painted as either victims or possible manipulators. You have to decide at the end to either believe in the ludicrous possibility of re-incarnation and in doing so accept that a mother has literally let her daughter be abused and murdered - handed to the wolves because she was herself a victim of child abuse. If you don't believe the re-incarnation story then you have to believe that a 10 year old girl and her mother have deliberately made up a terrible story to supposedly gain financially - just horrible! The story of repeated child abuse is pretty nasty and quite frankly I'm a bit fed up of this kind of representation of girls and women across t... morehe media - not surprised this was written by a bloke!!
review 2: I read this book over 4 days during a holiday vacation. I found it a very gripping read and in between looked forward to the next instalment. There were many strands to the book from the heart rending depiction of a mother's anguish due to her daughters disappearance 10 years ago, to the intriguing suspense surrounding the reappearance of a girl, the image of Amy, who claims to be Beth's missing daughter. There were lots of twists along the journey and I was probably guilty of rushing through towards the end. The ambiguity of the ending worked for me and it made me want to re-read some of the earlier parts, in light of what was revealed. Overall it was a very original psychological thriller and I will look out for future work by the author. less
