review 1: This book was incredible. I could not put it down. Honest, heartbreaking, hilarious and mystical, all in one. It is the story of two parents and their autistic son Rowan. The family travels to Outer Mongolia, hoping for healing for their son through the help of the indigineous healers of that land, as no therapies have helped this boy, whose condition has worsened. A rare gem of story. Anyone interested in child development, indiginous healing practices or spirituality needs to read this. This story offers a rare glimpse into the world of autists and shamans, a glimpse into a complex, misunderstood universe.
review 2: This is quite a surprising book. I picked it up expecting an interesting story, but instead it turned out to be a fascinating story. Isaacson is ... morea master story teller, he is a man of strong emotion who is in touch with them, and his vivid descriptions of Mongolia and the people are simply nothing less than exceptionally good. After you finish this book, you would like to get to know the author, because he comes across as a really humble, dedicated spiritual and yet fun person.What a challenge to write a book like this, a true story about a father's persistence in dealing with his young son's autism. And yet the book is a veritable page-turner. With every one of the boy's progresses you find yourself cheering, and when there is a setback you can feel the disappointment coming off the page. But the book in general is upbeat, Isaacson's willingness to go literally long distances to find answers and his willingness to endure just about anything to help his son is greatly moving and inspiring. less
