review 1: Retired a year as an elementary school librarian, I have begun reading "grown-up" books as my children called them. Mostly I just look for interesting titles or author's I have never read when my stack at the library is one or two shy of what I intend to check out. Secrecy was a quick pick once I read the summary and like other reviewers, I read for love of historical fiction. Having been an art major in college, the time period was familiar and the importance of secrecy understood. While some of the story line was uncomfortable, the fact that this was a time of exploration and the need to understand things beyond the surface was the background, I overlooked that to get a good look at a character who was an artist at that time. The descriptions--the sense of wonder and the... more fear of discovery made this a wonderful read. As a mystery buff, I wanted to see the solution to the situation and find out just what the author would do to end the story. Children's books rarely end badly and I am never sure with a "grown-up" book just how the end will leave me--hanging with the wish for a sequel or satisfied with the ending good or bad. Ten pages from the end of this story, I haven't decided, but I'm glad I found it or perhaps it found me. I doubt that a sequel will be necessary! Now on to the end!
review 2: This book is not my usual cup of tea, but a friend recommended it, so I thought I'd give it a try. Thank goodness for friend recs. I adored this tale of a man in seventeenth century Italy, trying to balance art with the repression and hypocrisy of the times. There's a mystery woven throughout, just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. What I loved most, though, is that it's really an examination of people and their motivations. less

Somewhat confusing, meandering story and definitely creepy. Not a recommendation.
