review 1: I got this as a freebie from ibooks, and here it says this story is best read second. Well if so they should offer the first story, not the prequel, for free. Because this story, while well written, was not captivating enough to draw me into reading the original story. It was very well written but very technical and almost repetitive. I'm still on the fence about spending money for king of swords. I think I wanted to like this story a lot more than I really did.

He seemed like an interesting character and I kept expecting him to be reintroduced somewhere in the story. Maybe the stories of El Rey and Alberto could have been intertwined. Or the author could have taken turns interspersing Alberto's life in between El Rey's life to show how each came to be at the same place they were in the beginning of the book. less

Not what I usually read and the writing is very uneven. But it's a fast read.

Would really give this one 3.5. Good prequel to the King of Swords.
