review 1: Audience: This is a great choice for anyone interested in unique stories or the American Revolution. It would also be a good choice for readers who like to look at copies of real historical documents. It is also a great biographical resource on one of America's earliest hero's. The reading level and determining importance skill level are high so I would say 4th grade and above who most benefit from this book.Appeal: The illustrations in this book are amazing and the picture captions tell the story in a way that could really stand alone. The chapters are short and full of all kinds of formatting that adds to the flow and content. There is also a timeline at the end.Award: This was a 2011 Robert F. Sibert Medal Honor Book.
review 2: Audience: Older, inte
... morermediate students would be the best age group for this book. American history is generally taught around 5th grade, so this would be a great addition to a classroom library. Appeal: Any child interested in the American Revolution would like this book. There is a fantastic timeline at the end of the book that would assist even a slower reader. The story of Lafayette begins with is childhood and goes through his life, even after the war. There are several historic pictures in this book that would help readers to see the events and bring them to life. The story has quotes and memoirs of many famous people of the time. The writing is done in such a way that is flows well and is not dry. The 10 chapter, 76 page book would make it a relatively easy read. Language in the book is not difficult or over the heads for most readers of the above mentioned age group.Award: Robert F.Sibert Award Honor Book, 2011 less
