review 1: Just as its title suggests, this book is all about World War 1. It details the events that launched the war to the armistice details that ended the war four years later, giving voice to most of the countries involved on both sides of the fighting. Freedman intersperses many primary accounts of the action throughout the chapters and chapters of dates, names, battles, and locations. This helps make the numbers dead and wounded more personalized and meaningful.I appreciated hearing about the war primarily from first person accounts. I would say that Freedman's use of quotes is practically 50/50 with the outlined facts. Though we don't get primary characters to follow through this kind of informational text, it helped me to have "dialogue" from the variety of players in the "s... moretory." Nonfiction is usually my last choice to read, but I found this book to be a clear and interesting account of history. My favorite story was probably that of Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon turned national hero. Freedman uses simple and straightforward explanations and details, which makes this text suitable for middle grade readers.
review 2: This book is a surprisingly detailed account of world war 1. It starts off with the politics behind the assignation of Franz Ferdinand and the steep road to war created by alliances. It touches rather briefly on the eastern front and very briefly on the Gapoli campaign and the middle east. But, I find the western front the most interesting and this book gave a detailed account of it all the way up to the treaty of Versailles. I Rated this book 4 stars because it was refreshing to read a book that goes into more detail. But, I don't think it was "amazing" and it wasn't as long as I would of liked it to be. But overall its a great introduction to World war I learners and I would recommend it to adults and 6th graders through 8th graders. I would recommend this book to all of my friends because it is detailed but not too detailed. less
