review 1: Suspension of disbelief. If you're looking for a reason to hate it, over-analyze any aspect of it and you'll likely succeed. As a light, fluffy read, ignoring political possibilities and repercussions (although I admit that some of the outraged reviews on here sound pretty valid, if you inspect them from that point of view), it was enjoyable. A quick read and a different spin on things. At times cheesy and hard to believe, but I pretty much only require my historical novels to work within the limitations set for them.Example, to become an engineer on Eglin, Chris would have had to gone through extensive security clearance. I assume that whatever was in that nice little folder Caitlyn received would cover a while fictitious background thorough enough to satisfy the US Gov... moreernment letting a civilian work on an Air Force base as an engineer with no prior documented education... birth certificate... work history... bank accounts.... rental history...See? Suspension of disbelief.I admit that there were parts of the background history that bothered me, and after her easy and willing acceptance (apparently she's not the paranoid-about-government-conspiracy type), I chalked it up to Caitlyn being the type of personality that would be ok with an arranged marriage. I mean, the agency matched her for a reason, right? Shrug. To be totally fair, I really hated the other book I read by this author last year, and stopped reading another one after the first three pages. The first was a historical romance that didn't at all work in the time period it was placed. Plus, the writing in that one irritated. The second was just ridiculous. This one was less repetitive and had less restrictions, structure-wise. This is not my favorite author, but I felt this book was readable.Anyway: light, quick read. Finished it in about three hours. Would probably read the second if I came across it, but privacy not the third.
review 2: I picked this up for a challenge (needed a wedding themed book). I didn't make it that far before I started to see red. Issue number one: "He didn't like the idea that a woman might decide his genetic line didn't suit her." Poor baby, a woman might decide to not have children with you. Boo-hoo! Issue number two: "I know, but I was warned the women on Earth can be emotional. I'm not sure if that's worth it." Now, I realize it was someone else (not Rilo/Chris) that said this, but really?! Issue number three: "Marn: So you're planning to go through the ceremony as soon as you see who the agency picked for you?" "Rilo/Chris: I don't want to give her time to back out." Awesome! Who needs consent?! And that's all folks! I put it down after that, and promptly hit the delete button on my Kindle. less
