Uglies is a book that shines a truth on how the modern day world sees beauty. Tally is a 15 year old girl who is waiting for the day she turns 16 and can have the operation that every one of her friends has had. Once she has this operation she can finally see her friends again. The operation removes all of the “flaws” from a person. Flaws could be considered things like a big nose and acne, but the operation also fixes things like their eyes being to close or too far apart. Tally is the last one of her friends to get the operation and just days before she is due to go under the knife she meets another girl Shay, who does not want the operation.

Shey challenges Tally’s view on beauty and what she really wants and through the book you begin to realise what true beauty is. This book is very well written and has a meaning behind it that is so important especially for young people who feel they don’t fit in.

Definitely worth a reading to see what happens in the end.
