review 1: Although the historical facts are interesting, Goodman's writing is too weak to keep my interest for long. There are several inconsistencies that make me question how carefully the book was researched and edited. Worst of all is the author's defense of corsets. She insists that they cause no harm unless too tightly laced, but she even downplays the damage to women caused by the tight lacing. I can't tell if that is irresponsible or ignorant.
review 2: Fascinating, absolutely. Any person interested in the Victorian period --in England -- would find the book hard to put down. I just wish the author had included notes or citations so I could trust what she has to say and not just take her word for it all (the reason for three stars instead of five). Still, I found
... more the book to be intriguing and spent several happy hours researching some of the points the author makes. less

To much I did this or I did that. Don't really care what the writer experienced.
