review 1: This book is part fictitious & part non-fictitious. The quoting from newspaper & other sources is perfect but some lines you'll read as like you are watching bollywood movies. This sequel to Dongri to Dubai from Hussan Zaidi is okay but not good enough. In comparision to his first book where he described in details about Dawood Ibrahim & his rise in Mumbai is nothing. Here you'll read mostly about Arun Gawli (goon turned politician), Ashwin Naik & his brothers & lastly about Chhota Rajan. I understand it is tough to write in detail about the life of gangster from birth till his adulthood. But I like how Zaidi put his hardwork to find as much as details. The only thing I was mostly annoyed was breaking from the flow & writing about someone else. You'll get introduced to many... more other gangsters in this book whose name you never heard of. I really wanted Zaidi to focus on one character in a given chapter but you'll get lost once you find some other character in between. Though, it'll definitely keep you interested if you are excited about reading the mumbai mafia.
review 2: Hussain Zaidi for me is as talented a writer as a Chetan Bhagat, Amish. Tripathi or an Ashwin Sanghi..So while reading Byculla to Bangkok...I had to constantly question myself on whether this really is a H Zaidi book ? Comparing Dongri to Dubai with Byculla to Bangkok would be like comparing Chicken TAndoori to Bland boiled chicken. Here are some of the reasons why according to me this book sinks like Titanic in to depths of disappointments:1) H.Zaidi introduces around a million characters which are clearly divided into 2 sides : Good & Bad..The Good side consist of Politicians & Cops while the bad side that of Goons..What is infuriating is that almost every goon has a similar story (poor childhood+lavish gangster lifestyle+encounter)..The monotony of this gets to you soon & you stop caring abt the Characters.2) The Narration is bland, boring & can put you into snooze mode in seconds..You feel like you are reading a timeline based on Criminals in a very Newspaper kinda format. 3) Dongri to Dubai had blood chilling dialogues that helped readers get into CHaracters & understand them better while this book has practically no dialogues apart from 2 bland interviews...so all the goons be it Gawli, Rajan or Naik as well as cops & politicians appear like Caricatures with no substance or Charm to them.4) The Sequence of. Events are messed up which further confuses you. 5) The author fails to show the Ruthlessness of dons as well as the bravery of cops or politicians against them. Conclusion: Heroes sometimes do fail...This time Zaidi has. less
