review 1: Being a die hard fan of underworld movies, from the cult GODFATHER series to iconic films like Satya, company, i never in my wildest dreams imagined myself reading a book based on the lives of Female Gangsters, but eventually i did get to read a fabulous book about the lives of female mafia who once ruled the male dominated industry of the Mumbai underworld. The biggest positive that works for this book is the theme selected by the veteran journalist and a crime reporter S.Hussain Zaidi, about the edgy, thrilling life of women mafia in Mumbai underworld. The writing is a visual treat to the readers, the writers really touches the nerves of the readers in the initial scenes of all the story, and sets a wonderful pace for the rest of the story. The spine chilling story of Sa... morepna Didi, leaves you cold for a moment, its perhaps the best story of the book, but it would be an injustice to judge any of the stories since its a non fictional book, each protagonist have had their set of struggle, they have their bog moments, their low moments. Hussain Sahab very effectively crafts the narration making it look like an edge of the seat thriller, and succeeds very easily, and not to forget the forward by the talented filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is an icing on the cake. A must read for everyone who wants to explore the dangerous, cunning side of females............GO FOR IT
review 2: The book is a compilation of different stories around the "so-called" mafia queens / gang ladies of Mumbai. While the topic and most stories are intriguing, the book as a whole fails to grip the reader. Most stories have been formed from news paper articles and interviews with people related to these females. It doesnt go into depth as the author couldnt get much insights into their lives. Except for the first 2-3 stories of Jenabai, Gangubai and Sapna didi, others are too small to capture attention. The last few females can hardly be called Mafia queens as they just happened to be associated with one of the gangsters. Case in example here is Monica Bedi who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. However, the book does build your curiosity to explore more on their lives. Its a fast read and hence can be a decent domestic flight material less
