review 1: Dongri to Dubai was an eye opening account on the underworld of Mumbai, and the rickety yet frightening machinations of the Mumbai police. It even touched upon global politics and terrorism.However, The writing is weak and plagued with cliches, which bumped one star off the rating for me.Another pet peeve of mine was the book jumped around events and facts which occurred at different time periods. The chronology was not presented clearly and that made the sequence of events confusing sometimes.With all said done, the story of the Mumbai Mafia is definitely worth reading, and with that in mind I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain familiarity with its subject matter. I must say that parts of it were even more stranger than fiction.
review 2: Dongri... more To Dubai is a narrative of how the underworld and the mafias changed the city of Mumbai after India's independence. Hussain Zaidi has tried to bring in all possible mafias, local goons who have been part of the Mumbai underworld at some point or the other. Some of the plots in this book can be very easily found in a couple of Bollywood movies. Zaidi has made a very realistic attempt to show the rise of Dawood and the events behind him leaving India. He has kept it simple and showed a broader view of how underworld operates. Many might feel that there are too many characters who are not at all linked to the main plot and have been introduced at various points. But this is perhaps a result of his experience and research which has gone behind such a plot and hence makes sense to show this from all kinds of perspectives. Highly recommended if you want to know how the underworld started operating in Mumbai. less
