review 1: I don’t know that I would be able to intelligently refute the arguments made by the author, as his historical and mood disorder credentials are anything but dubious; however, it does feel as if he is stretching his thesis in his attempts to apply it’s tenants to some of the leaders contained within this book. I will leave that discernment to future readers. Two glaring objections: 1. The author frequently rails against the exact type of research/assumptions he is conducting in the name of science, 2. It is made imminently evident where the author’s political affiliations lie.Despite these drawbacks, a very readable and interesting psychiatric journey through some of the most famous leaders of the modern era.
review 2: The essential idea behind this book is
... more that our greatest leaders in times of crisis are often mentally ill. The problem I had with this book wasn't necessarily the premise. The book was redundant and written like a college thesis. The historical figures were not fully flushed out. There evidence of their mental illness was limited, and the author included the evidence that supported his thesis and discounted evidence to the contrary. Of the historical figures, I thought William Tecumsah Sherman was the best developed and perhaps the most interesting figure. Martin Luther King was the least developed figure I felt. less
