review 1: I always get excited when there's an indigenous character venturing beyond the tropes of South Asian literature. However this book was a huge disappointment. Don't mind chicklit or light-hearted literature but this had none of the hilarious self-awareness that makes Bridget Jones-esque books so irresistible. Made me cringe throughout. The character was insufferable. One of the few books in my life I couldn't finish.
review 2: While there is nothing particularly valuable in this book, I still found it to be captivating and a page turner. The plot is one of those endless cliched Bollywood rom-coms where the girl and boy have been friends since forever and go through romantic trials and errors to discover that they really do have a romantic interest in each othe
... morer after all. So, the plot was predictable. I found the main character, Ayesha more interesting. So Ayesha doesn't really typically fall into the set class categories that are found in Pakistani societies. While her lifestyle may be very elite class and her views very liberal since she's drinking and having sex both of which are taboos in Pakistani society and get a 100 times worse if you are a girl, the fact remains that she is very much in touch with the ground realities of Pakistan. No one can accuse her of being a liberal-elite class person sitting in her air-conditioned homes completely ignorant of the plight of the more unfortunate Pakistanis outside their 10 kanal well guarded farmhouses. She's seen gang related crimes and fights, been approached by muggers, been caught up in a bomb blast, had little to no money left in her personal bank account and so much more. This I found to be rather refreshing. I don't think I would have finished this book if she had been one of those elite class ignorants who are out of touch with the realities of this country.Other than the above, there is not much merit in the book. It offers some very good laugh-out-louders here and there but mostly it's just bland, cliched and unambitious. less
