review 1: I am surprised to read such negative reviews of a book that I thought was extremely well-written. You needn't be a theater junkie to enjoy the setting for the book (I certainly am not) but it provides a great backdrop for the characters to inhabit. It really is a character-driven novel and the characters made a lot of sense to me. I liked them all and hated them all at different points. Sadie Jones describes their inner lives with an easy clarity, though their decisions are often complex and complicated. I think Sadie Jones is a particularly astute writer because of her keen insights and ability to create a certain mystery to characters that keeps me curious. We don't know any more than the characters do themselves, so as they grow and inhabit their lives we get to l... moreearn through their experiences with them.
review 2: When I read Sadie Jones' first novel, I thought "She's the real deal." I don't know if I've reviewed all that this young British author has written Sometimes I'm slack on publishing reviews because I'm on to the next book, BUT. . .I think she is one of the best Anglo novelists of this millenium. I just finished Fallout, which doesn't deal with issues of aparthied or economic corruption or. . . , but it deals with what we all know best -- love, obsession, rejection, insanity, dysequalibrium, and more. I loved Fallout. It has deeply drawn characters, a plot with good forward tilt, a satisfying and well-earned ending. Oh, and good, clean writing which many novels lack these days. less
