The Stranger – Characters

I will write a profile of the characters in the series for further reference.

Patrik Hedström is one of the main characters. He is a police officer and works in the police station in Tanumshede. Patrik and Erica start their relationship in the first book of the series as he runs into Erica at the police station. I am not sure about this, but I think they knew each other from school or something. Patrik is divorced, but we get the impression that his first marriage was not a happy one.

Erica Falck is the second main character. In the first book she returns to the house where she grew up after her parents died in a car crash. Erica is a writer and as the books progress, she becomes more and more successful as a novelist. Erica falls in love with Patrik; then they move in together, and she falls pregnant just months after they meet, and they have a baby daughter Maja. And in this book they get married. Erica has a sister, who she has a very special relationship with, as she feels she has been a mother to Anna since their mother never cared about them.

Maja is Patrik and Erica’s cute daugther. In this book she is just 8 months old.

Anna is Erica’s sister. She has gone through a lot as her husband beat her up and was a bully. In the previous book Anna killed Lucas, her husband, in self-defence, and now she lives with Erica and Patric. Anna has two children, Emma and Adrian.

Dan is Erica’s best friend. Erica and Dan were an item when they were very young, but they broke up and remained friends. Dan married and had two daughters, but he divorced his wife when she discovered that he had cheated on her. Dan misses his children a lot. Now in this book he and Anna have started a relationship.

Annika Jansson is the receptionist at the police station where Patrik works. Annike is a lovely woman. She is married but has no children, as all her pregnancies ended up in miscarriages, which is something that still hurts her.

Martin Molin is Patrik’s trustworthy colleague at the station. Patrik is a nice man, red-haired, and he is in a relationship with Pia, who he met in the case of ‘The Preacher’. Pia works in the tourism office, and now she is going to have his baby.

Mellberg is Patrik’s boss, but he is rather clumsy and authoritative. Mellberg is quite pathetic a figure. He had a bad experience when he had a relationship with a woman he met online; when he asked her to live with him, the woman turned out to be an embarrassment and a thief. Then he also discovered he had a teenage son, Simon, who lived with him temporarily, and now they have a distant but regular relationship. In this book he thought he had fallen in love with a woman he met at a dance, but Rosemary turned out to be a con-woman, who cleaned his bank account.

Gösta is a mature police officer. He can sometimes be lazy, but when he is willing to work, he is brilliant. Gösta likes playing golf and can’t wait for his retirement when he will have all the time in the world to play gold. Gösta is a widower and has no children as the only child he had died when the baby was only a few days old.

In this book the characters that are part of the plot are:

Hanna Kruse is the new police officer who joins Patrik’s team. At first we think that she is married to Lars, but in the end they turn out to be twins, and they are the murderers of Marit and Barbie as well as the victims in the other towns.

Erling Lavson is a member of the council in town which pushes for a reality show to be filmed in town and his house.

Erik Bohlin is the television producer

Jonna is one of the participants in the reality show. Her problem is that she cuts herself as she feels neglected by her parents, who are important doctors and only care about their patients.

Barbie is one of the murder victims. Barbie is called a bimbo and the way she copes with life is through her body and sex. Barbie is blonde, has big breasts, and she enjoys sex. Yet, there is more to Barbie than meets the eye. Barbie was traumatized when her father died, leaving her alone. Her father was a victim of Hanna and Lars.

Calle is another participant in the reality show. He is a rich boy, but his trauma is that because of his father, his mother committed suicide and he found her.

Tina is another one in the reality show. Tina wants to be a pop star, but she sings terribly.

Uffe is a violent, cheeky contestant.

Mehmet is one of the nicest participants of the show. His parents come from Turkey, but he feels he is a disappointment to them. At the end of the show he realises he wants to stay in the town, and he starts a relationship with his boss in the bakery, Simon.

Marit Kaspersen is the first victim. She was first thought to be the victim of a car crash, but the investigation showed that she had been forced to drink to death. She was divorced, had a daughter, and at the moment of her death she was in a relationship with a woman, Kerstin.

Kerstin is Marit’s life partner, and the night Marit died, they had an argument as Kerstin wanted to get out of the closet, but Marit was afraid for her daughter.

Sofie is Marit’s teenage daugther.

Ola is Marit’s ex-husband, who is not a very nice person. Too obsessed with order and cleanliness, and even after being separated for four years, he couldn’t accept that his wife had moved on, and he wrote nasty anonymous letters to her and made cold calls to scare her.

Rose-Marie is the woman Mellberg falls in love with and in the end she cheats him out of a chunk of his money.
