review 1: I struggled a bit with this book, I found it slow going and a bit dull. There were a lot of fighting scenes, in fact the first 200 pages are pretty much non stop fighting scenes on the same boat but with no real reason as to why or any plot behind it. I only really bonded with Kataria the Shict, the rest of the characters including the main character were dull and uninteresting and barely interacted except to express their hate and distaste for one another which got boring very quickly. The idea of the band of adventurers was nice and could have read like a game of Dungeons and Dragons had the story been better written but it just didn't grip me in the same way. I wouldn't read it again I don't think.

It read like an excellently run D&D campaign with all manner of other complications and surprising depth towards the end. I will read more of Sykes, and he sky-rockets up the list of 'authors I'd really like to hang out with'. less
