review 1: This was my first book by this author. # 14 in the series starring V. I. Warshawski, Private Investigator. The lead character is interesting, but I found her unbelievable at times. She's has many succesful cases, has many loyal friends, but if that's so, why doesn't the authorities have no respect for her. The police officer she's had other contact with treater her with disdain. I also didn't like how the book ended. None of the bad guys got punished because they has power and money. The bad guys won every encounter. The may be what happens a lot in real life, but this is fiction. I want to see the good people get justice. I didn't see that at all in this book. I don't know that I'll read any more be this author.
review 2: When I can't find a good mystery, Sara
... more Paretsky will do in a pinch. She keeps the story going and I always want to know how it ends; she's not one of those authors with whom I can actually put the book down and not finish it. But, this story had too many cute names that were repeated over and over and I just felt like the whole premise was too contrived. I do like her character V.I. a lot, and that's why I keep picking up her books. But, far from her best and reminded me why she's generally my last resort. Airport reading, better than dreck. less
