review 1: Since I've enjoyed other mysteries in the V.I Warshawski series, I purchased this book at a library book sale. It was a 'can't put down', fast read. Very entertaining, some violence but easier to digest than recent novels by other authors. Chicago private investigator, V.I. Warshawki, is asked to find a man who's been missing for four decades. During the search skeletons from Chicago's racially charged history, as well as family secrets emerge. To complicate the search, V.I.'s cousin who she'd never met, Petra, arrives from Kansas City to work on a political campaign. As V.I. struggles to find clues of the missing man, a nun who marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. is killed and V.I. suffers serious burns in a blazing fire set to silence the nun's crucial information. ... more Complicating the original search, Petra disappears. This is an interesting 'who done it' with a little of our country's history during the Martin Luther King era woven in.
review 2: There were times when I wanted to just turn this book off. Everyone seemed to be screaming. VI always appeared to be on the verge of being out of control....and screaming at people; even her thoughts back to when she was at home with her mother - even yelling at mom. It was exhausting. Some of her reminisces seem to go on an don with no advancement of the story - I did hit the forward arrow and skip to the end of the chapter when that happened. I did stick it out to the end, however. But this may be the last Paretsky book I read. less
