V.I. Warshawski
review 1: When I picked this one up at the library I was unaware that the heroine in this story is V.I. Warshawski (not related to auto parts? - who knew). Every once in a while a bit of cracking wise popped up that seemed just a touch incongruous; but for the most part the story was the story without trying to embellish with outside factors like blatant sex or history or science. The sweep of the story from pre-WWII Vienna up to the modern age was well done with very little confusion when the story flashed back to pre-Anschluss days. I am now forced to reassess some of my Vienna knowledge, as Paretsky has named the Leopoldstadt as one of the Nazi-created/dictated Jewish ghettos - a feature of the city that had escaped me in the past. I'm giving it four stars, although it is unl... moreikely I shall return to this story again - but it's possible.
