Mirabelle Bevan Mystery
review 1: ★Brighton Belle★ - 3 starsSet in Brighton 1951, Brighton Belle tells the story of Mirabella Bevan ex - secret service who now works as a secretary for a debt collection agency who comes across a case a missing pregnant Hungarian refugee, Romana Laszlo. Bella's secret service duties were office based with no field experience. With her boss, Big Ben McGuian taking unprecedented 72 hours sick leave, Bella decides to investigate this case further. In an Agatha Christie style, we follow Bella's investigation, commencing a new friendship with Vesta Churchill an insurance clerk down the corridor. Quickly Vesta becomes Bella's assistant as they investigate disappearances, mystery gold sovereigns, the odd murder and dead bodies. Not everybody is as they seem.Whilst not a ligh... moret subject, the novel is a light easy read mystery in the vain of Miss Maple. We learn a little of Bella's wartime life and recent loss of love, this story unfolds against the back drop of the investigations. Additional character from Bella's wartime service, Father Sandor joins the investigation. The investigation finds Vesta and Sandor working together and leads to poor Vesta finding herself in danger. The story contains a number of twists and is engaging. This novel is the first of what I understand will become a series, with the second title "London Calling" recently released. Whilst I am yet to read the next installment, " Brighton Belle" is a sound series foundation novel.I would recommend this novel to readers who enjoy an engaging mystery, Agatha Christie time period. Great light reading for a weekend or summer read.
review 2: Brighton Belle is a murder mystery of the highest order and not all at the same time. For me it’s as much about Mirabelle as a person as it is about her solving the crime at the heart of the novel. She’s fascinating and half the reason I found the novel so enjoyable. She’s very much an unlikely heroine, sitting behind her desk at the debt collection agency, but this adds to her charm. The also novelist excels when it comes to setting a brilliant scene and it’s the little details which add depth, such as Vesta’s Cadbury’s biscuit tin which sticks in my mind. The pace of this novel quickens as you’d expect as it veers towards its conclusion and more and more facts about the mysterious Laszlo are discovered. As the reader follows Mirabelle and Vesta on their dangerous quest they’re as believable as any crime-fighting duo team in literature or film. This novel is evidently part of a series, one which I can’t wait for the next installment of, as elements are left open to interpretation and there are holes that will undoubtedly be filled in a later date. The relationship between Mirabelle and Superintendent McGregor is one that I’m particularly looking forward to seeing develop (I hope that it does anyway). An unexpected hit, extremely enjoyable and exactly my kind of read. All the drama and thrill of a murder mystery set in a time period I find particularly interesting. less

This was a fun 1950s mystery. The heroines might be just a tad TOO plucky, though!
