review 1: A 2014 YRCA Senior Division nominee, What happened to goodbye is a coming of age book about life lessons and learning who you really are inside. McLean Sweet has moved four times in two years with her Dad. Her parents split up and her Mother has started a new life, with new kids. She is happy to leave it all behind with her Dad and forget about the life they had. She has started each place fresh, new clothes, new personality, new girl in an attempt to leave behind her past and the heart ache that goes with it. McLean has learned to keep people at a distance and avoid meaningful friendships as she constantly moves. For Lakeview, the new town she and her Dad are moving too to save another restaurant, she has a new name and persona planned and the same strategy worked out. He... morer plan runs awry when she meets her new friends and it isn't so easy to pretend anymore. She begins to realize that by constantly changing who she is on the outside, she is forgetting who she is on the inside. Dessen is able to depict the common teenage emotion of wanting to be somebody different with ease. With strong supporting characters to guide her and in the end find her, McLean learns that change is a part of life and it is the past and present that makes us who we are.• Voice of Youth Advocates Perfect 10’s 2011• VOYA Top Shelf Fiction 2011• Young Adult Library Services Association 2012 Best Fiction for Young adults• YALSA Readers’ choice Nomination 2012, Realistic Fiction• YRCA2014 Senior Division Nominee
review 2: I thought that this was a good book. Sarah Dessen books are always good. I've always thought the restaurant business was interesting because it seems so complex. It was cool to get an inside look, even if it was just fiction. The main character, McLean, moves around with her dad for his job. Her dad rebuilds restaurants and makes them better. Whenever she moves, she picks a new personality; goth, preppy, athletic, and so on. I think that her changing personalities are interesting because I have wondered what I would do if I moved schools, and what type of person I would be. less
