review 1: Why I read half the story is a mystery. There really isn't a sense of hope. It says on the cover 'Homeless, but not hopeless'. Hmm.. Most of the circumstances didn't make sense. I couldn't respect the parents at all. If the parents were experienced tailors, you would expect that one of the first things they would get a hold of was a needle and thread and cloth. Why was the dad wearing the same crappy clothes through the whole book? A camp ground must be full of stuff that people actually leave behind like shirts and towels. Ember is old enough to babysit so there is no reason she couldn't swap for a decent pair of cast off shoes or a swimsuit. The dad could have gotten to know some of the other people in the campground and made connections that would have gotten him a job... more out of town. Where was the Red Cross after the fire? Why wasn't there an investigation into the cause of the fire? The parents supposedly moved about from place to place before they had kids. Why didn't they pick up and move somewhere that actually had work? My brother sleeps in his truck in the parking lot of a park. So I know people do live in parks and campgrounds when they have no where to go. He can't even afford the nightly fee. This book just doesn't capture that reality in a way that pulls at my heartstrings. I disliked Ember's spoiled little sister and couldn't understand why the parents treated the girls so differently. They didn't seem like very good parents so maybe it would have been better if CPS had checked in on the kids.
review 2: What a beautiful book. There are so many ways this subject matter could have turned maudlin, but the fact that it is, in fact, restrained, echoes the feelings and behavior of the protagonist, who isn't able to fully allow herself to feel her sadness for her loss of her home, her dog, and her best friend.Really, this is a gem of a book. I haven't had the pleasure of reading Ms. Dooley's first novel, but I'm planning to buy it tomorrow. less

BookLOVER
Reminiscent of Waiting for Normal, with a similar protagonist, but a somewhat more realistic ending.
