review 1: SO FAST-PACED AND RIVETING! 'Scan' was filled with non-stop action and a plot that kept my eyes glued to my kindle. However, I didn't care for the main character (who, for all the claims made about his extreme intelligence, exhibited the IQ of a gorilla in so many circumstances that I began to suspect that genius was code for idiot.) Tate was rash and arrogant, with an egocentricity made more obvious by the way that the author made the entire story almost entirely revolve around him. But I did enjoy the concept of the world unknowingly integrating alien genes into its entire population, and the struggle of the few 'pure-bloods' to regain the integrity of their homeland. With the positive aspects of 'Scan' balanced with the negative, it was a solid 3 star ... morebook.
review 2: I listened to the audiobook of this story. It was interesting though not exceptional. It left a lot of things unexplained. It was clearly meant to be the first book in a series and, as such, left a lot of unanswered questions. It ended with a bit of a cliffhanger. The main character is a bit of a teenage MacGiver but at least the author provides a decent backstory as to why a 16 year old has such exceptional applied chemistry skills. About an average book. less
